What the new facebook timeline means for your facebook page.

The new facebook page timeline rolls out this weekend. (March 30th to be precise.) What does this mean for your business or company’s facebook page and how can you make the most of this change? I will sum up the things you need to know to make the most of your facebook page and to take full advantage of the new timeline. Read on!

The cover image

The first main change to the facebook page is the use of the cover image. This large image is quite a striking feature and bows to the new fashion of large banner images currently trending amongst modern websites. This cover image can be used to create an eye catching, compelling image of your company or brand. There are some rules and regulations that facebook is imposing on the new cover image. It may NOT contain any advertising, special offers or contact details. There are other rules that you can read about in this article, but in a nutshell, all you need to know is that having a logo and a strapline or business catchphrase in your cover image is ok.

This sample image is one we have created for Costa Blanca Villas facebook page. Check out their page and like it if your like the design or are interested in what they do.

Facebook Page Cover ImageNo. 1 shows the large cover image with the allowed logo and strapline for the company. No.2 is the new profile image, now square. No. 3
is the new messaging system that allows your fans to email you directly rather than writing on your wall.

The technical information: Cover image size needs to be: 851 x 315px.

Stop SOPA – don’t allow censorship

Stop SOPAThe last couple of weeks has seen great unrest amongst the internet fraternity. The SOPA bill (Stop Online Piracy Act) has been going through the American government and if passed would effectively allow multimillion dollar companies, mostly in the entertainment industry, to censor content on the internet. It would give them the ability to take down any website deemed to be offering pirated content, videos, music etc. Whilst this could be seen as a good thing, after all online piracy is against the law and by the vast majority of people considered a bad thing, the bill was so badly written that it could be construed by lawyers in many different ways allowing the censorship of all content added to the internet by anybody.

I cannot claim to know enough about the issue to write about it in an unbiased manner, however you can read more about it in the following places:

  • Wikipedia – one of the websites who took part in the ‘website black-out’ strike on 18th January. Their article title Stop Online Piracy Act is currently in dispute.
  • Stop American Censorship – the official website for the STOP SOPA organisation.
  • SOPA Strike – What happened online on the day of the strike, 18th January 2012.

Tip 22 - email addressIt is quite amazing how many businesses there are that have a website but don’t use their domain email address. For example they have the domain www.yourbusinessname.com but they don’t use the email address associated with it e.g. info@yourbusinessname.com.

If you have your own domain name, you have the opportunity to have any email address with that domain name. Your web hosting package will allow you to setup anything from five email addresses to an unlimited amount of addresses and they are easy to set up. If you can’t do it yourself, your web design company, or the customer services of your hosting package will be able to help you. (more…)
